Even though most of my days are spent in my yoga pants homeschooling my four boys, when date night calls, I can’t help but get gussied up! But not at the risk of causing hormone disharmony with toxic ingredients… which is why I’m sharing my favorite safe cosmetics and natural brands below. I think you’ll love them too!
I got a chance to get a little “me time” at a spa day this weekend (my Mother’s Day gift from Mr. Incredible, so it was quite the treat!). After having a hard hormone year (two moves + tons more stress really does a number on a girl), my skin has become a record to show just how bad things got. And even though my hormones are balancing beautifully (ok, slowly and with great effort), my skin has been slow to conform.
So when the aesthetician told me about a popular skincare brand that she used to get her own skin blemish-free, I had to be honest: I wasn’t comfortable with the ingredients. With sulfates, parabens, and harmful fragrances, I couldn’t imagine applying the products to my skin, even if I would have quick results. It simply isn’t worth causing more hormonal problems in the long run.
Thankfully, there are safe cosmetics brands who care about women’s hormones and health, and don’t use ingredients like parabens, phthalates, PEGs, and toxic fragrances and preservatives. And these more natural brands are actually effective- we’re talking beautifully pigmented makeup, smooth, silky hair, and glowy, clear skin. I’ll run down all my favorites below!
My favorite safe cosmetics – the makeup and haircare products I really use
Don’t worry, dahhhling, you can have your cake and eat it too!
Someday, maybe I’ll have makeup-optional skin, but then again, I love a red or berry-hued lip now and again! Here are all my fave makeup products.
By far, Beautycounter is my favorite makeup and skincare brand, not only because the products are amazing, but also because Beautycounter third-party tests ALL of their color products for heavy metals, plus has an extensive “Never List” full of over 1,500 ingredients they’ll NEVER use.
I do use other brands here and there, so I’ll share my favorite natural brands below. Shop Beautycounter here.
Foundation- Beautycounter Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation. This foundation has a coverage that’s not too heavy and not too light; it’s just right to cover up blemishes, but keep a healthy, dewy glow. Get it here.
By the way, if I’m needing a little more help because my eyes can’t lie and the dark circles reveal that I either a. got glutened or b. was up with children all night, or my skin is being particularly uncooperative, I love the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen from Beautycounter, which you can find here.
In addition, I love putting on a primer prior to my foundation, and 100% Pure’s Luminous Primer gives a gorgeous base for your foundation!
Eyes, lips, and cheeks- Again, Beautycounter is my fave, hands down. With deeply-pigmented colors that last, while still avoiding harmful colorants, the blushes, eye shadows, and lip sticks from Beautycounter are my favorite. Here are the ones I wear most frequently:
Ultimate Nudes Eyeshadow Palette- it contains 18 neutral shades, a double-ended brush, and a removable mirror. Three different finishes—satin, metallic, and matte—create endless looks for every skin tone. The shadows even get their luxurious texture from naturally-derived cocoa seed butter. I typically use an eyeliner brush to line my eyes with one of the darker shades. Get it here.
Powder Blush Duo- these blushes deliver the perfect amount of healthy-looking, luminous color without looking garish! My favorite shade is the Flamingo/Apricot duo, but you’ll also find softer and cocoa-toned shades. Get it here.
Sheer Lipstick- my favorite lip product in the history of ever, these lip sheers are the ultimate everyday lipstick, because they’re smooth, subtle, and polished (and even have a lovely hint of natural vanilla scent). Twig is my jam. You can see all the colors here.
Color Intense Lipstick- however, if I’m wanting a bold lip to last all through date night, the Color Intense Lipsticks are where it’s at. I recently chose a bold berry-red that I’ve been having some fun with. Check out all the shades here.
Finding the right safe cosmetics when it comes to skincare is easier said than done because we all have such different skincare needs! Is your skin dry? Oily? Sensitive? Acne-prone? All of the above?
I actually have had all of the above skin problems, so I’ve experimented a lot, and what I’ve found is that I like to keep it simple. Here’s what I like best:
Charcoal Cleansing Bar- ideal for oily or blemish-prone skin, this detoxifying cleansing bar absorbs impurities in your skin without drying it out, resulting in a clearer, smoother, and brighter-looking complexion. I’ve found it to get my skin just the right amount of clean without being harsh. Get it here.
Nourishing Cream Cleanser- gentle and soothing, and it smells nice too! This is a great basic cleanser. Get it here.
No. 3 Balancing Facial Mask- with clay and charcoal, this mask helps to balance your skin and draw out impurities. It minimizes the appearance of pores and contains salicylic acid to stimulate exfoliation. Get it here.
Germ Fighter Synergy Essential Oil Roll On- I’ve found that rolling this pre-diluted essential oil blend over problem areas helps to clear up blemishes, thanks to its bacteria-busting properties. I get the roll on here.
Overnight Resurfacing Peel- my new favorite thing in safe cosmetics, I can’t believe what a difference this peel has made after just a few uses! After suffering a particularly bad breakout this past week (thanks PMS), I used this peel (with 15 resurfacing acids!) several times in quick succession (it’s safe enough to use several times a week, so I thought I would hit back hard!).
My skin has never started clearing up so quickly! It’s also good for aging, and improves skin texture and minimizes the appearance of pores, fine lines, and dark spots without irritation or over-drying. Get my new skin BFF here.
You might not think of your hair when you think of safe cosmetics, but the haircare industry is full of harmful ingredients as well, and I’m so thankful I’ve found a safer brand that WORKS! Monat has stricter standards than your average haircare brand, and works better than anything I’ve ever tried- natural or not – to keep my hair manageable and silky smooth.
Plus, my hair is growing like crazy thanks to the patented hair regrowth ingredients in the products.
Yes, I’m aware of the naysayers, and yes I still feel comfortable using, selling, and promoting the products. I have tried everything under the sun, from plain water washing, to baking soda and apple cider vinegar, to expensive salon brands, and health food store natural brands. Nothing has done for my hair what Monat does, and with much safer ingredients to boot!
If you’re worried, I suggest you check out Cheeseslave’s posts on the topic. Here’s why she switched to Monat, where you’ll find a spreadsheet of the ingredients when you scroll towards the bottom, and here’s where she debunks some myths about Monat’s ingredients. They are worth the read if you really want to get to the truth about these products.
Now on to my faves! Here’s what I use:
Monat offers an extensive collection of shampoos for every hair type. Because I live in a dry location with hard water, I need moisturizing for my hair, and because my hormones have caused hair loss (which is thankfully mostly a thing of the past now), I also need the hair regrowth formula.
I rotate these shampoos, but always wash twice, leaving the shampoo on for a couple minutes the first wash to let it work its magic. I usually start with the Black 2-in-1, then follow up with Renew or Smoothing.
Renew Shampoo- a salt and sulfate-free gentle, hydrating cleanser that penetrates and moisturizes the scalp, it also boosts natural hair growth and improves follicle strength to aid in reducing hair thinning. Get Renew here.
Smoothing Shampoo- a daily shampoo formulated to gently cleanse and nourish while smoothing and softening the hair cuticle to reduce frizz. I find it helps to smooth all the little baby hairs I have coming in thanks to regrowth! Get it here.
Black 2-in-1 Shampoo- I bought this originally for my hubs because it has a high concentration of hair regrowth ingredients, but after I lost a great deal of hair following surgery, I decided to start using it as well. Since I’ve been using it consistently, my hair has grown back in leaps and bounds! Because I have long, dry hair, I always follow it with a conditioner, but it’s perfect for guys with short hair to use as a 2-in-1. Get it here.
Smoothing Deep Conditioner- works on all hair types to nourish, control frizz and add brilliant shine. It has helped a lot to tame my wiry baby hairs that seem to have a mind of their own, as well as nourish and moisturize dryness. Get it here.
Restore Leave-In Conditioner- I usually use this even following the Smoothing Conditioner in the shower, or sometimes to smooth dry hair and help tame it between washes. It’s also great to pair with the 2-in-1 shampoo for those with short hair. Grab it here.

Extras I can’t live without
In addition to my regular washing and conditioning routine, I’ve been working on repairing my hair after a really bad color experience at the salon (thankfully I’ve found someone I love who does a great job on my hair since then!). I use a variety of products to heal split ends and moisturize my hair and scalp.
Rejuvaniqe Oil- think of it as a magic multi-tasking elixir. That’s really what it is. It contains 11+ unique molecular ingredients –including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids.
I use Rejuvaniqe about once a week as an overnight treatment, as well as following washing to smooth over hair, and to help tame flyaways after drying or between washes. It really is an all-in-one magical product, and a little goes a long way. Literally, I use only a drop or two for everything but the overnight treatment. Get it here.
Rejuvabeads- selectively targets and heals split ends and other damaged or stressed areas along the hair shaft, eliminating breakage and frizz, decreasing friction, increasing shine and helping improve color. I am so thankful that Rejuvabeads has really helped to heal my damaged hair! Check it out here.
Replenish Masque- also a big help to healing my damaged hair, this masque has helped my hair become so much more smooth and silky! Note, it should only be used about once every four washes. Get it here.
Blow Out Cream- helps to make my blow dry time quicker, while making my hair smooth and silky. It doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy or weighed down, even after I’ve used Rejuvaniqe, Rejuvabeads, and Restore following a wash. Get it here.
My favorite system
Monat offers something called systems: sets of hair products that are uniquely created to work together to meet your hair’s needs. I adore the Effortless Style System, which includes my favorite Smoothing Shampoo and Deep Smoothing Conditioner, as well as the Blow Out Cream. You can get it here or check out all the systems here.
Hint: if you want to save some $$$ on style systems or any products, consider becoming a VIP, which will save you 15% and allow you to get perks like free shipping and free products. You can read about that here or send me an email at jaclyn@thefamilythathealstogether and I’ll be happy to set you up!
Miscellaneous safe cosmetics and personal care products
I thought I would also include a couple more of my very favorite products- toothpaste and deodorant.
Hippie Stick Deodorant- by far my favorite deodorant of all the natural brands I’ve ever tried because this deodorant smells SO good. Even if I sweat, I just smell like lovely essential oils, and I’m ok with that! Get it here.
