I wish Jaclyn Harwell's e-cookbook Nourishing Holiday had been available when I started on the Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet years ago. I can vividly recall the way I felt that first holiday. I was definitely torn. I had already experienced some life changing healing after just three weeks, but at the same time, how could I celebrate without all the familiar favorites I'd eaten all my life? I love that Jaclyn has been down this same path, and knows exactly how it feels. She set out to recreate the holiday favorites for her family, and now she's sharing these awesome real food grain-free substitutes with us! I've been reading the cookbook... the photos are s.t.u.n.n.i.n.g. and the recipes...oh boy. I may need to make some of these recipes earlier than holiday meals. I am definitely going to be choosing one or more of these dishes to share at the next potluck I attend. Thank you Jaclyn for putting together this gorgeous cookbook just in time for the holidays, I can't wait to try the Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake Pecan Pie...Eggnog Ice Cream...Mama's Sweet "Corn" Bread Stuffing...Party Mix...nom nom nom.
There are a lot of cookbooks in the world. I can count on my hands the ones I actually use on a regular basis. Nourishing Holiday is brimming with gorgeous photographs; it's a joy to behold. But more importantly, it contains all the holiday recipes that people on the Paleo or other allergy-friendly diets desperately need. I cured my rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue syndrome by changing my diet. It took two years but I healed completely, and most people can, too. With this lovely cookbook, you can get through the holidays without cheating or depriving yourself. Even though I eat gluten and grains now, I can't wait to try these recipes.
As a GAPS Practitioner, I am frequently asked by my clients and GAPS Class participants about what to do for the holidays? What can I eat?I am always on the lookout for resources and treasures that make this nourishing (albeit challenging) dietary protocol as delicious and rich with culinary delights as possible. Nourishing Holiday is the holiday resource I’ve been looking for! The focus of Nourishing Holiday is to allow you to enjoy holiday foods without compromising the standards needed in a gut-healing protocol. This book will be a great resource for those adhering to a grain-free diet through the holidays.
While most of the recipes don't require "fancy" equipment, there are a few tools that are helpful, including a high-powered blender like a Vitamix or a food processor, a hand mixer, a stick blender, and a stand mixer.
No. I've used ingredients that can be found at most grocery stores in order to keep recipes easy and accessible for everyone.
Some special ingredients, like lard or blanched almond flour, may not be in every grocery store, but many do seem to be stocking healthier options these days.
The recipes in Nourishing Holiday feature healthful, real food ingredients that are rich in good fats and proteins. Recipes consist of meats, eggs, nuts, and cultured dairy. I do offer some suggestions for substitutions.
Recipes are sweetened with honey and dates.
Nourishing Holiday is written primarily for the GAPS diet, but it also works for diets known as "primal" and "paleo," though paleo typically means no dairy. There are some substitution suggestions for dairy, however.
My goal is to make healthy food accessible for everyone. I try to keep recipes simple and uncomplicated for both seasoned and newer chefs.
